Just Another Day In Paradise

The cabin has been in Rob's family for about 16 years and it's been pretty much my favorite place to go. Ever. It's even better than Disneyland. Theme parks are fun but after a couple of days you're ready to leave the spinny, loopy rides and go home. When I go to the cabin, I never want to leave. Ever.

The part of the river that we normally float is very much like this all the way down with plenty of relaxation but not a lot of excitement:

Leave it to Rob to suggest we go even higher up the river than we have ever gone before. On Sunday afternoon, we threw the rafts and the kids in the truck and we headed up the hill. We passed our usual spot and he just kept going. . . When we finally stopped, the only place to go into the river was down a steep hill from the road to the water. OK, it was a path leading down to a little cozy camping spot and we all made it without any problems, but when we put in the rafts and started a little way down the river, we heard, and then saw, this:

Rob's raft was in the lead and he made the call that we shouldn't try to go over this. If we would have had actual river rafts and life jackets, maybe, but there were too many rocks and just a little too much excitement. The kids, of course, wanted to try it but, instead, we carefully packed the kids and the rafts along the side of the river in order to go around it.

It turned out to be a fun little adventure for everyone.

When we were settled back in the rafts, Kurt decided to put his raft in just below the big rock in the very middle of the falls we had just avoided.

We all watched to see how he would do and I desperately tried to take a video.

My camera decided to freeze up right at that moment and this is all I got:

We faced a few more spots of fun, little-ish rapids but much of the river was pretty shallow and calm:

Kurt was a Good Samaritian and helped this poor man out of the river. The man was too big, his tube was too small and the river was too rocky and shallow. He was quite stuck.

I had the boys in my raft and they were great navigators. I got to kick back and relax. . .

Rob had the girls in his raft and he and Hailey made a great team while manuevering over the rapids:

Kurt had his own private boat most of the way but he finally captured one of my captains and they took off down the river:

Well, I guess in this river, one doesn't really "take off". . .

Did I mention the river was beautiful??

We eventually made it back to the cabin where Rob and Gloria found a cute, little lizard:

When Zach was younger, we would find these little guys up here and take them home as pets.

Very interesting. . .

Rob and Kurt had to go back to the festival and take everything down but they were nice enough to let me and the kids stay behind. I felt a little guilty but not enough to do anything about it . . . They were pretty tired when they got back but Rob wanted to play a game. He picked Settlers of Catan. It's been awhile since we've played this as a family so I forgot just how torturous it is to play this game with Rob.

It was torture. . .

Hailey finally put us out of our misery and won the game!! Now it was even later but the kids wanted to roast marshmallows by the fire.

It was a nice way to end the day. It was about this time, however, that I started facing the reality that fun-time was almost over. . . . We would be heading back home and back to real life on Monday. .
