Today was an insanely bad day. It turned out just great in the end, but it was pretty much Murphy's Law from the get go. It started a couple of days ago when Rob agreed to build a case for a local church. That, in itself, wasn't the problem. . . We were already over booked when two other sound company's that we work with occasionally, called in some favors and added two extra shows on top of the three we already had in the span of three days. Dale took the stage to Sun Valley on Wednesday (a planned event), knowing that he had to have it back for an early morning stage set-up in Meridian on Thursday morning (another planned event), causing him to drive through the night, getting home around 4 a.m. so we could set up the stage at 9 a.m. and still have plenty of time to set up and run Nampa Nights (WHEW). Meanwhile, Rob had this case to build AND he got the two desperate phone calls Wednesday afternoon. One of them was for a gig on Thursday evening in Boise and the other was for a Friday night event in Sun Valley. We had already planned on practicing with Straight Away on Wednesday night, so on the way out to Nampa we tried to figure out how to make all of this work. We decided the only way to accomplish everything was for Rob to finish the case Wednesday night, even if it took all night. He finished most of it and came home around 4:30 a.m. Dale gave us a wake-up call at 8 a.m. and Rob got up and met him down at the event location. I was planning to meet them there to drape the stage and help with finishing touches when I got a call that there had been a mix up and the stage wasn't needed. On one hand, this is good- less work. It's also less money AND both men could have slept through the night had we known. THEN, on the way back home, Rob got a call with another cancellation- the extra Thursday night event in Boise. Again, good and bad- less work, but less money. AND THEN. . . a mistake had been made with the Sun Valley gig and it was actually a Saturday event, not Friday. Good: we could have a recovery day on Friday with more time to load the gear and not feel so rushed. . . Bad: we have a 10 a.m. set-up on Sunday morning at The Ste Chapelle Winery in Marsing. We decided it would be best to cancel the Sun Valley gig but it didn't look like that was an option at this late date. We were trying to digest all of this information while Rob finished up the case and we headed out to Nampa to set up Nampa Nights. Fortunately, the only glitch there was that the acoustic group we were expecting brought a full band which made the set-up a bit more complicated but other than that, it went very smoothly. Lori and the Ritchies came out to listen to the band and hang out with me, so that just made everything better. After Nampa Nights, we loaded everything we need for Sun Valley into the van and it actually fit. So, we'll just drive back after the show Saturday night to make the 10 a.m. set-up in Marsing. It was an exhausting day that teetered on the edge of insanity but it ended well. The case was completed and picked up, the one show we salvaged went well, we have a workable plan for the next two days, I'm having lunch with Vic tomorrow, and my camera is crippled but not broken- I can't zoom or download onto my computer yet, but
I can still take pictures. Rob can fix anything!! :)
Post Script (added on Friday, August 10th): I bought a $10 card reader (duh) and can now upload my pics onto my computer again!!!!!
