New Year's Day

New Year's Day, 2008, came way too early. With that many people and a couple of dogs, sleeping in just isn't possible. Here's Jered and his teddy bear just waking up to greet a New Year:

Due to our crazy lifestyle, my kids don't have a problem staying up really late. . . it's the getting up early that proves truly difficult. Megan is naturally an early riser, so she's quite a bit perkier here than Gloria:

Shawn and Katrina graciously offered to provide breakfast on New Year's Day so Shawn was up before everyone else, putting the rolls and the other breakfast goodies in the oven. It was a good thing he did since the power shut down completely just as the first pan came out of the oven. The plan (before the power outage) was to eat in shifts but we all took just a little less and there was enough to go around. Shortly after the power went out, the smoke alarms all started bleeping in unison. All of the smoke alarms in the cabin are situated entirely too high up on the walls, so we finally had to hoist Zach up to the most attainable one so he could cut the noise:
It worked!

Since it was daylight and we knew we wouldn't starve, we mostly ignored the loss of power, which we came to find out covered a very large area and affected around 1200 Idaho Power customers. The necessities we couldn't seem to live without were the T.V. (for the Bowl games) and the coffee pot. Rob started up the generator and we were set. I took even more pictures of the deer. It's really hard to resist when they are so accessible!!

We all headed over to the sledding hill for more snowy fun (except for Gary, who stayed behind to watch the fire . . . Yeah right). Rob got out the four wheeler and made the uphill climb a little easier for awhile.

More fun sledding pictures. (Some of these were taken by Kristin):

The power came on briefly in the afternoon but it didn't last. We played another game of Settlers, mostly by candlelight until Rob plugged a lamp into the generator.

Everyone but Kristin and the kids left in the evening and we had a relaxing evening waiting for the power to be restored. When the deer ran out of goodies outside, they would come begging to the window.

This one is on the porch, approaching the front door:

We finally had to turn off the generator to conserve our gas but we decided to sleep close to the fire so everyone could stay warm. We were supposed to have an update from Idaho Power shortly after midnight but when I tried to call, the rotary phone was dead as well. Rob got up several times to stoke the fire and the power finally came on sometime between 3 and 4 a.m. turning on every light and appliance in the cabin! It was a rude, but welcome, awakening!
